Maruti Suzuki Baleno has been a huge success in it’s segment after it has been launched in India. Well, they too had introduced the automatic transmission variant along with it’s other manual transmission variants. But honestly, I did search on the internet for any good reviews but didn’t find any good ones. So I took a test drive of the automatic transmission variant of Baleno and here’s my review!
Almost everyone might have seen a Baleno on roads of India, so everyone might be aware how it looks. For the people who are interested in talking tech, here we go!
Starting with the dimensions, length of this car is 3995 mm, the width of this car is 1745 mm and the height of this car is 1500 mm. The wheelbase is 2520 mm and the ground clearance of this car is around 170 mm. Personally, with these dimensions, I didn’t find any issue regarding ingress or egress, so I feel a person who is 6 ft tall will be able to get in and get out of the car comfortably.
Now let’s talk about the looks of this car. From the front, the first thing which strikes you is the big smiling front grill with the Suzuki logo in between. Chrome coated design strip flows seamlessly below the grill and move upwards to join the headlights. You do see that these headlamps also feature LED Day Time Running Lights and projector lights (only the top-end variant).
Coming to the side profile, you observe the shape of the car is coupe like shape which gives this car a sporty look from the side. The 16″ alloy wheels look good too but I felt that the design looks too cluttered. You also do get chrome coated door handles.
Heading on to the backside, it looks pretty good; but I felt that the tail gate (boot) closing is placed at a higher side, making loading little difficult if you got too many bags in your hand. But once you open up the boot, you see it is quite deep and spacious too. Technically, the boot volume is around 339 Litres with the back seats upright. You will get more space with the back seats down. The tail lamps are very attractive with all LED lights in there. You can also see a chrome coated spoiler running along the tail gate which has space even for a reverse parking camera. I felt the rear windscreen is a bit smaller to my liking.
Stepping inside the car, you will get a kind of a premium feel. The all black interiors give a rich and plush look inside. You have fabric upholstery on the seats and they are pretty comfortable. They just soak you in as you sit inside this vehicle. The steering wheel and the gear knob is wrapped too but not sure whether it is leather wrapped or not. One thing I must say; the front seats are placed a bit higher and hence you get a good visibility of the road ahead. The driver side front seat is 6-way adjustable but manually.
Moving on to the back, I have to say this; Baleno has one of the best back space in it’s segment! I don’t think any hatchback offers this kind of space at the back. Well done Suzuki! In terms of seating, the thing support is good, and three adults can sit comfortably at the back. You also get an airy feeling behind, meaning the windows are large enough so you do not feel claustrophobic at the back. You don’t get rear A/C vents but the air conditioning in this car is good enough to cool everyone in the car.
This car gets a single zone automatic climate control air conditioning and must say it is pretty good. The steering adjusting is telescopic i.e you can adjust the steering according to your liking. You get a multi-function display (MFD) in the speedometer console which shows you the current time, mileage, two trip meters, odometer, the torque and power of your car it is generating, and much more. You also get key-less entry with push start button for starting the engine.
The infotainment system is a Smartplay Infotainment System which supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, built in navigation and also supports bluetooth playback and iPod connectivity. The system is also enabled with voice command which can be activated with the button on the steering wheel. Also, the audio controls are present on the steering wheel too. You can also view the reverse camera display on this infotainment system.
The car is equipped with dual airbags (driver and passenger) along with ABS (Antilocking Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), Anti-theft security alarm, etc. I must say, this car provides ABS and EBD as standard across all variants. Great going.
Starting the car, you feel that the engine is pretty silent. The engine is a 1.2 L VVT Petrol Engine which churns out 83 hp at 6000 rpm and produces a torque of 115 Nm at 4000 rpm. It is a 4-cylinder engine, unlike other 1.2 L engines which are 3-cylinders.
The automatic gearbox is a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) gearbox. Shift the car into D mode, and drive ahead; you will feel a smooth driving experience with this gearbox. You also get a tiny button on the gear-knob which engages Sport Mode when you press it. As you start driving, you feel that the steering wheel offers a good feedback and is quite light to use. The engine is peppy and ready to roar but the only let down is the gearbox. Don’t get me wrong, but this gearbox isn’t suitable for overtaking. If you are planning to drive this car in local areas, then it is fine, but you go for overtaking or something, it’s a let down. In some cases, enabling the sport mode can help. But the good part of this gearbox is you get good efficiency. Around 13-14 kmpl in city and 17-18 kmpl on highway depending on driving conditions.
The car is pretty stable at high speeds. The car crosses triple digits seamlessly and you do not get that typical body roll at higher speeds. The suspension is on the softer side hence bumps and potholes are absorbed very easily with this car.
The car is a value for money. I agree it’s on a pricey side and you got other options but good handling, good engine, good space, etc. are the plus points of this car. If you are a person who is looking for a car with good space and good handling and loaded with features and with a convenience of an automatic gearbox to drive in daily traffic then it’s worth a buy.
